Abstract:Idling vehicles and equipment adversely impact air quality, often near densely populated areas, and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Idle reduction technology (IRT) refers to devices that enable diesel engine operators to refrain from long-duration idling of the main propulsion engine (referred to as “extended idle”) by using an alternative power source. IRTs can reduce emissions and enhance fuel efficiency by enabling operators to power essential functions without relying on main engines. In addition, IRT can optimize engine performance in stop-and-go traffic conditions.
