Abstract:Speakers Leni Oman, Andy Everett, Kathy Szolomayer, and Christy Granquist identified challenges in using data and information. As members of the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Vocabulary Team, a Subcommittee of the WSDOT Data Governance Council, the group found that employees spend between 15% and 50% of their time looking for the data and information they need. Funded by a FHWA grant, the group sought to improve findability of information through application of metadata guided by the F.A.I.R. Principles. Recommendations included creating an enterprise glossary that defines key terms used at WSDOT, creating taxonomies using information standards, and developing an enterprise thesaurus.
