Abstract:

The 2021 Vehicle Inventory and Use Survey (VIUS) was not designed to be compared to the 2002 VIUS due to the length of time between the survey cycles and changes in state coverage, sample design, weighting methodology, and analysis. Data users should exercise caution if comparing 2021 VIUS estimates with those from the 2002 VIUS. This document summarizes the differences that limit the comparability of the 2002 and 2021 VIUS estimates.
