Abstract:This report covers the work done during the development of efficient schemes of car sorting and train formation in a hump yard. Various schemes were studied with particular reference to the expected hump yard activity in the proposed West Colton Yard. Some fundamental schemes as well as several practical examples are described in the report. Using these fundamental schemes and the examples as a guide, suitable detailed schemes can be developed for each yard with a view to minimizing the total effort either on a system-wide basis or on a purely local basis.
