Abstract:This Traffic Tech briefly summarized a literature review conducted on the concept of Jacobsen’s 2003 “Safety in Numbers” (SIN) theory of an inverse relationship between the extent of walking/bicycling and the probability of motorist collisions with pedestrians or bicyclists. The literature review described research leading to development of the SIN concept and the subsequent work to test and expand upon the theory and considered fields of study including engineering, planning and land use, sociology, psychology, education, public health, enforcement, human factors, and others.
