Abstract:The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) directed this comprehensive study that includes background research and analysis on needs and gaps for voluntary standards or recommended practices for crashworthiness and crash energy management (CEM) for less than 30-ft paratransit body-on-chassis buses (cutaways). It includes case study evaluations for four states—Florida, California, New York, and Pennsylvania—and a supplemental examination of National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation reports and recommendations associated with similar vehicles. Findings are presented related to voluntary standards, guidelines, or recommended practices related to crashworthiness, crash energy management, data needs, and future research.
