Abstract:The Marine Transportation System (MTS) contributes to U.S. economic growth, enhances U.S. global competitiveness, and supports national security objectives. The MTS consists of an extensive network of waterways, ports, and their intermodal connectors, vessels, vehicles, and system users. Each component of this system is dependent on the other for the smooth and efficient flow of waterborne trade, transportation, and U.S. foreign and domestic commerce. The aftermath of September 11 has emphasized even more the importance of the efficiency, safety, and security of the entire U.S. transportation system. This report provides an update on major trends in maritime trade, transportation, and shipbuilding, and includes special reports on the Saint Lawrence Seaway and on maritime transport and the environment. The data in this report are grouped to reflect U.S. Department of Transportation strategic goals related to mobility, economic growth, safety and environment, and national security. This document can be downloaded as a single PDF file (3.06MB) or viewed as individual segments in HTML format. Individual figures and tables can be downloaded also in Excel and CSV formats.
