Abstract:This study was initiated in the spring of 1990 when the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) applied for and received a grant from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to pursue an economic case study of the potential for a scenic byways system in New Hampshire. The project was carried out by a scenic byway project team including a representative from the Governor's Office; the office of State Planning which was assigned primary administrative responsibility for the project; the Department of Resources and Economic Development, Office of Vacation Travel (DRED/OVT) which focused on the implication of such a program on the Tourism / Leisure travel industry; the NHDOT which was concerned with the highway implementation of the overall program; and the FHWA which had a significant interest in the project as part of the larger national program.
