Abstract:The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) National Transit Geographic Information System (GIS) is a representative inventory of the public transit assets of the country. Creation of this national system is an ongoing and collaborative effort on the part of many within the transportation industry. Use of these transit data will facilitate the exchange of information within the U.S. Department of Transportation and throughout the transit industry. This effort supports the mission requirements of the Department of Transportation, particularly as established by the Intermodal Surface Transportation Effciency Act (ISTEA) of 1991. Most notably this includes the development of a GIS- based National Transportation System for transit routes as a major element of the National Spatial Database Infrastructure (NDSI).
