Abstract:This paper seeks to answer the question of what has been learned about cross-cutting technical and programmatic issues over the last decade of the National ITS Program. The paper also looks at new areas where ITS investments should be made, with the focus on major findings or trends. Two main factors are considered qualitatively: demonstrated success in contributing to one of the key ITS benefits (such as delay reduction, capacity increase, customer satisfaction, etc.) and amount and rate of deployments achieved compared to time elapsed since the technology was first demonstrated. Discussed are sensors and surveillance, communications, analysis tools, archived data, architecture, and standards.
