Abstract:This report describes the instrumentation and data acquisition for an eleven span segmental, post-tensioned
box-girder bridge in Connecticut. Based on a request from the designers, the computer-based remote
monitoring system was developed to collect temperature data to provide engineers with information for use in
the evaluation of the long-term behavior and performance of the bridge. The system was used over a five year
period to determine maximum and minimum temperatures through the box girder cross section and to develop
thermal gradients in both the vertical and transverse directions. Comparisons have been made with design
specification provisions and with recommendations proposed by previous researchers. In addition, software
has been developed to determine the relationship between the daily maximum temperature differences and the
air temperatures inside the box girder. This approach is also used to develop the relationship between the
maximum stresses due to temperature differences and the air temperature inside the box girder. The
monitoring system is currently being upgraded.
