Abstract:This report gives a survey about selected material concerning age and aviation-related psychophysiological functions. The author analyzes the results obtained by many investigators from longitudinal and cross-sectional studies that may be useful for the development of a functional age index for pilots.
Particular emphasis is given to studies on the effect of age differences as measured by standardized tests of sensory, perceptual, mental, cognitive and neurophysiological functions and processes, and the quantitative or objective assessment of personality traits and structure. A few examples of graphs, tables, curves, and mathematically expressed relationships between these parameters and age are given. The age-related changes of these variables and their implications to possible and actual pilot performance are discussed.
